The Science of Psychological Crisis Intervention

By: George S. Everly, Jr. PhD, ABPP, FACLP

Publication date: April 2025

To answer the question, “Is crisis intervention effective?” we must rely on more than anecdotal case study empiricism, we must look to well-conducted research, as well. This video presents a 12-minute introduction and review of research that supports the field of psychological crisis intervention, psychological first aid (PFA), and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). This video will be especially valuable as a tool for trainers, but students will find it informative, as well.

Title information

Da Vinci is believed to have advocated, “First study the science, the practice the art.” It seems a truism that the highest levels of practice are grounded in a knowledge of the science of the art. Research in the fields of psychological crisis intervention and disaster mental health is not easy to conduct. This difficulty has led to the use of inappropriate research designs and questionable research conclusions. This video presents a 12-minute introduction and review of research that takes the mystery out of the science and to varying degrees supports the field of psychological crisis intervention, psychological first aid (PFA), Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD), and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). This video will be especially valuable as a tool for trainers, but students will find it informative, as well.
